George Catlin (1796-1872) Buffalo Harbor from the Village
George Catlin (1796-1872) Buffalo Harbor from the Village
Buffalo Harbor from the Village is an important and nicely done illustration documenting the edge of the Western frontier village as it looked before the momentous effects of the new Erie Canal. This view is one of several of Catlin’s engravings of early Buffalo published in one of the first printed books to use lithography, Cadwallader D. Colden’s Memoir, Prepared at the Request of a Committee of the Common Council of the City of New York, and Presented to the Mayor of the City, at the Celebration of the Completion of the New York Canals, published in 1825. Catlin is best known for his later paintings documenting the Native American tribes of the West. A nice companion piece to Catlin’s Buffalo from the Lighthouse.
