Total Eclipse of the Sun
Total Eclipse of the Sun
This rare astronomical occurrence was captured by French artist and astronomer Etienne Trouvelot (1827-1895). Fascinated with what he observed through a telescope, he drew what he was seeing with pastels. In his lifetime he produced more than 7,000 astronomical illustrations. This view is one of his 15 best published in 1881 as both a book and a set of oversized folio prints, both part of the Library’s Rare Books & Special Collections.
